The story behind Dotmic - First Public Ecommerce Search Engine

The past few year of my life has been a great journey and I proudly quote

"The journey is what brings us happiness not the destination." ( Dan Millman)

November 2009, its time for our final year project at college. The last time I will ever get to do something I am passionate about, in college. Let’s push it to the limit this time and do something no one has ever dared to do. Let’s build a robotic arm with artificial intelligence. Well like most final year projects we never completed it. We ended up building just the robotic arm and less than 5% of the artificial intelligence (AI) .On June 2010, my college days are over.

While my friends moved on to become Software engineers in many reputed companies, I decided to take the more risky path; the path of an entrepreneur .I founded my first software company. Though it was tough in the beginning, eventually we went on to make profit. But my incomplete final year project haunted me. That was when I decided to do research on artificial intelligence and found that I would never complete my project, because it had a lot to do with subjects with arrears in past. Some of those subject where Discrete computational Science(3 attempts to pass),Database Management System(3 ) ,Mathematics(4,5 not sure),Compiler Design, Computer Architecture ,Pattern Recognition, Natural language processing, Graph Theory & Combinatory. Those are the list of nightmares that any software engineer could have. But I never quit and began coding and went on coding for the next 2 years. In those 2 years I had tested 3 prototypes which all failed.

In March 2012 the 4th prototype was ready and results were quiet promising .This was when the idea hit me, that artificial intelligence had a lot to do with a computer’s learning & understanding human language, then why don’t I use it to make a search engine. I discussed with my fellow entrepreneur and decided to build an e-commerce search engine. We leased a few servers and tested the 4th prototype on larger scale and by the end of March it happened, a major server crash. The company from which we had leased those servers was very angry and warned us. It was quite fun actually because when our program crashed it took down more than 200 websites hosted on those shared servers. But with that crash I had lost all my hopes.

b2ap3_thumbnail_finahub.jpgFinahub Internet Services LLP, a Kochi-based SaaS startup that offers a customer management platform for retail brokers, is betting big on multi-million retail investors in India for the success of its web-based solution.

Set up in early 2012 by engineering graduates Rajesh S and Ajith K George, the company offers a ‘Kinship Platform’ that enables retail brokers to manage all customer-interfacing activities using a single platform. This ensures better customer engagement and higher operational efficiency by automating processes such as report sending and customer ticket tracking. Finahub clients will also have a better understanding of their customers by leveraging all customer-interaction data available on the platform. The platform can be easily integrated with existing websites and no technical team will be required to build and manage it.

Finahub has already roped in Kochi-based retail broker Hedge Equities as its first customer. The firm charges its customers on a pay-per-use basis and monthly billing will vary, depending on the number of users a customer adds to the platform and the number of modules used.
